Every gamer has certain illustrations that bring back great gaming memories. Here is one of mine. His name is Thaagwa Ulmus. For some serious Grognard Cred, tell me where your adventurers would encounter him?
It was in an adventure in Dragon magazine, probably during second edition, thought I can't find the issue right now.
The adventure featured a dungeon shaped like Gruumsh and was focused on a magic orcish spear. The picture is a priest of Gruumsh who features heavily in the adventure.
He looks kind of familiar to me, but I can't quite place him. An adventure in Dragon Magazine?
There's one I remember running where the adventurers went to a town called Awad, and I'm getting an Awad vibe off of him, but I'm probably off base. Interested to know the answer.
Which issue of Dragon was Citadel? It was back in the mid to late 1980s, right? I thought that it might have been a Dragon adventure (since that's where most of Raupp's work was showcased), but figured that The Evil DM wouldn't have pulled something from a periodical likely to be older than a good chunk of his audience.
Citadel by the Sea is from the Oct '83 issue of Dragon.
Thaagwa is a 3rd level orc shaman, and he has some pretty sucky stats:
Str 8 Int 11 Wis 10 Dex 9 Con 7 Cha 10 (14 to orcs or half-orcs)
Nice and 3d6-in-order-like, eh?
Of course, I don't know this off the top of my head. I had to look it up. Got issue #78 opened up on the desk here next to me...it's a great issue. Heck I can't recall what I ate for lunch today, let alone this. Hhmmn...did I even eat lunch today?
Citadel by the Sea a pretty old one. I recall getting this adventure out of the Dragon Magazine Archive CD in my mid-teens - although I never did actually run it - and I think it was published sometime before Issue #100...
Ah, Citadel by the Sea. One of the very few Dragon adventures that I actually ran for my group...
Anyway, they never did beat it. As I recall it had some good low-level puzzles, like the faux Elemental portals.
I tried to replace my copy of this issue at a used game shop a ways back but a few pages were missing. Gguess which ones?

Yeah, the module was the center signature and the previous owner had opened the staples, removed the module cleanly, refolded the staples, and sold it to the unknowing shopkeeper. *sigh*
Jawarl Avignon in "Citadel by The Sea."

Old skool hobgoblin, perhaps. No idea where the pic is from :-(

Word verification: Ovenetio! (sounds like a bard)
Crap. All I remember was that Roger Raupp drew that. I'll have to bust out the 1st Ed. adventures, and see if I can find him.
