My Friday Guilty Pleasure "Cracklin' Rosie" Mr. Neil Diamond

I have to confess this song always puts a smile on my face.

I never had a Mullet though

I have some great memories of the 80's. Of course, I didn't know they were going to be so great at the time ( if I did, I would have taken more pictures).
I graduated High School in 82 and spent 83-84 in a haze of self pity after a bad break-up. I joined the Army in order to take my mind off of my romantic troubles-bad move.  After the Army things started looking up and eventually became pretty damn cool.

Here are a couple of songs that always come to mind when anyone talks about "The BIG 80's".

Today's guilty pleasure...Dancing Queen.

One of the Evil DM's Guilty pleasures is ABBA's  "Dancing Queen".  Every time I hear it I do a mind trip back to my preteen youth, and suddenly I'm in a skating rink. I wasn't as much an ABBA fan as I was an Agnetha fan.
Agnetha was my first celebrity crush.
What self respecting 11 year old boy wouldn't fall in love with this angelic face?

The other chick wasn't too bad either, but then I was only 11 and not  too  knowledgeable about the  possibilities, but come to think of it, they were Swedish...

Willie K - Oh Holy Night.

I'm not too much for Christmas songs, especially here at the Lair where "She who must be obeyed" starts piping them in on December 1st.
There is however one exception, and that is Willie K's rendition of "Oh holy night".
This is the most beautiful and powerful rendition of this song I have ever heard. It reminds me of my years in Hawaii.  It's true what they say about living in Hawaii-it stays with you forever.
I posted this last year but I hope some of you newer readers will give this a listen. Anyway, listen to "Uncle Willie" belt this out and be prepared to be moved.
Aloha Bruddahs and Merry Kalikimaka.

Manly Music Monday

Gettysburg
One of my all time favorites. I have the special collectors edition of Gettysburg on VHS which shows several deleted scenes. Because of this edition I'll always have a VHS player.

A Bridge too far
Such a tragic story, with such a beautiful score. You can just feel the optimism as the song begins.

The Great Escape
This has got to be one of the Manliest Movies ever made. If you're a guy and you don't like this movie you need to turn em in on your way out.

The Magnificent Seven
I know it's a remake. Hats off to Kurosawa.
But these guys defined the term Machismo. And this song just makes you want to jump on a horse and start riding.

Kelly's Heroes
Another great ensemble cast. One of my favorites.
This is the song I want played at the Evil DM funeral.

Man, now I gotta go watch me some movies!

Oh, to be young and goofy. As opposed to just being old and goofy.

A bunch of books and Head East Live

I took the car in for scheduled maintenance today. The dealership said an hour and a half.  It was more like two hours. Luckily they had  a Used bookstore within walking distance.  Have a look at some of the treasures I unearthed amongst the musty stacks-

Banners of Sayen

Delia of Valia

guardians1

 guardians2

Legend of the Damned

My lord Barbarian

Red as blood

Whetted bronze

And in a miscellaneous bin was a real blast from the past.

Head East Live

I had this tape. I loved this tape.  The live version of “There's never been any reason” is one of the greatest driving songs ever performed.

I don't even have an 8-track player anymore, but for .25 cents I couldn't resist.

That girl on the cover has got to be in her sixties now…

A Christmas classic-Island style

I spent several years in Hawaii. Christmas in Hawaii is very special holiday. They don’t have the blustery weather and the snow men, so they give it a twist of their own and go all out in their special Island way.
A place that is already one of the friendliest places around becomes even more friendly.

One of my most memorable experiences was hearing a local musician by the name of Willie K. perform his rendition of “Oh holy night”.  his performance blew me away. the passion in his voice, the power of his words, the beautiful translation in Hawaiian, the whole experience moved me to tears. Willie K’s rendition of Oh Holy night became my favorite Christmas song of all, and every time I hear it I’m back in the islands, if just for a few minutes.

PO HEMOLELE! KE OLI NO NEI NA HOKU,
IA PO I HANAU AI KA HOOLA:
LOA KE AO MENA HEWA NA LUULUU,
KA WA IHO EA MAI, A OLU KA UHANE.
HAUOLI E NA LUHI MANAOLANA, POHA, NU HOU KA WENA O KA LA.
PELU NA KULI, HOOLOHE INA LEO ANELA,
KA PO KAMAHAO, I HANAU AI O KRISTO,
KA PO KAMAHAO, KA PO KAMAHAO.

I was in jazz choir in high school. But I was never this good.

My eldest minion turned me on to this kid. Very cool. Very difficult. Very talented.

Help a brother out - Vote for Hutt

When I began my Internet journey one of the first groups of people I met were a gang of GI Joe collectors on a list called "Action Heroes". One of the members was Hutt Wigley. It's been over ten years but many of us from that old list are still hanging out together. Hutt has taken his passion for action figures and has combined it with the wizardry of stop motion animation. This contest he's entered has a grand prize of $25,000 and the film gets shopped around to industry folks. This is a great opportunity for Hutt to get some exposure and make some connections in addition to funding for more equipment and future products. Here is a message from Hutt.:

Back in February of 2008, a local (Boise, ID) Hip-Hop artist, called QS the Soul Brother, asked me to create an animated music video for one of his songs. After listening to his catalog of music, I selected the song “Let’s Do It” which QS collaborated on with a rapper named Tone. I created action figure versions of the two musical artists and, using stop-motion animation, placed them in a sort of Indiana Jones-esque pulp adventure setting. Working an average of 6 hours a day, the video took exactly 3 months to complete.

The music video was shown at the GI JoeFest Stop-Motion Animation Film Festival, and won the 4th place Audience Choice award.

I also entered the video in the annual contest on aniBoom.com which ends December 2nd, 2008. To vote for it and leave comments, go here: http://www.aniboom.com/video/283351/Lets-Do-It/

Thanks for checking it out!

-Hutt Wigley

So there you go folks. Once again a fellow geek needs our help. please check out the video and vote for it. Yes, you do have to register with them to vote but it takes like 2 minutes- and this could be a life changing event for Hutt if he was to win. If you collect comics, action figures or play RPG's you know you have taken some shit from people who think those things are childish, here's a chance to toss it back at them and help a brother out in the process. the animation looks fun but it's a lot of work. Let's help reward hutt's dedication to his hobby.
Thanks.

Vote here.
