Heading down the Path

The Minions have played Basic D&D, Star Wars, Heroscape and Heroclix. I’m now going to try and bring their roleplaying up to date using Pathfinder. Despite the fact that I consider Dungeons and Dragons THE definition of a Roleplaying game, I’m drawn more to Pathfinder than I am to 4th ed. D&D. Besides I already own a couple of the Pathfinder books, whereas I don’t have any of the 4th edition books, and if there is one thing I have plenty of is books.

Ive been on the lookout for a series of modules to run them through and I decided to go through the series set in Falcon's Hollow to start.

Robert E. Howard's Savage Sword #1

As discriminating and thrifty as I try to be in my comics purchases I keep running into titles that have me reaching for my wallet just about every week lately.
Robert E. Howard's Savage Sword is just such a title.

Dark Horse has gathered some great material that has so far rarely been seen in the world of Sword & Sorcery comics. We are all well familiar with Conan, Kull and most recently Solomon Kane, but Dark Horse is taking the unprecedented step in printing tales of some of Howard's other, lesser-known adventurers. Dark Agnes (the original template for Red Sonja), the Pict King Bran Mak Morn, and of course one of my personal favorites Francis Xavier Gordon also known as "El Borak".
Each appears in serialized form and shares the book with a tale of the one and only Conan.
If you're a Sword & Sorcery junkie like myself, you really cant pass on this.

Dicey Tales status report

I’m currently at work on the last part of the manuscript a South Seas adventure titled “The Perils of Bonaga Bay”, after that it’s off to layout.
The first issue will include the basic guidelines to create a pulp era character using the Barbarians of Lemuria rules. It will also contain two adventures.
“The Horror in Jade”, written by Pat Dixon, is a supernatural adventure tale that takes place in San Francisco.
“The Perils of Bonaga Bay” is a straight forward adventure tale that takes place in the South Pacific.
I currently plan to have DT#1 ready for purchase at RPGNow by the end of February.

"Sword Woman" available next Tuesday 01/25/2011

From the Amazon website:

The immortal legacy of Robert E. Howard, creator of Conan the Cimmerian, continues with this latest compendium of Howard’s fiction and poetry. These adventures, set in medieval-era Europe and the Near East, are among the most gripping Howard ever wrote, full of pageantry, romance, and battle scenes worthy of Tolstoy himself. Most of all, they feature some of Howard’s most unusual and memorable characters, including Cormac FitzGeoffrey, a half-Irish, half-Norman man of war who follows Richard the Lion-hearted to twelfth-century Palestine—or, as it was known to the Crusaders, Outremer; Diego de Guzman, a Spaniard who visits Cairo in the guise of a Muslim on a mission of revenge; and the legendary sword woman Dark Agnès, who, faced with an arranged marriage to a brutal husband in sixteenth-century France, cuts the ceremony short with a dagger thrust and flees to forge a new identity on the battlefield.

Lavishly illustrated by award-winning artist John Watkiss and featuring miscellanea, informative essays, and a fascinating introduction by acclaimed historical author Scott Oden, Sword Woman and Other Historical Adventures is a must-have for every fan of Robert E. Howard, who, in a career spanning just twelve years, won a place in the pantheon of great American writers.

Comic news: Ruse is back, Skaar is back, and Dejah gets her own book

Ruse was one of my favorite CrossGen titles. It looks like Marvel is bringing several CrossGen titles back from the dead, and Ruse is among them. See here

Skaar, son of the Hulk seems to have landed in the Savage Land - Comic idea fodder for you Lost World lovers. See here

Ever wonder what Dejah Thoris was up to before John Carter came to town? Dynamite is expanding on their  hit Warlord of Mars, with a 4 issue prequel starring our favorite Barsoomian princess. See here

Season of the Witch

I have to be very forgiving with most of the "genre" movies I watch, otherwise I wouldn’t get through three-quarters of them. Fortunately, all of the movies I watched while researching Legends of Steel helped to build my tolerance of B and C -grade movies.  So, despite no local reviews of Season of the Witch (it's almost always a bad sign when the movie doesn't even warrant a critics screening) I went to check it out.

The story is about a pair of disillusioned soldiers, who after a senseless massacre of women and children in the Holy Land (in one of the cheesiest battle montages I have ever seen), decide to leave the crusade and return home. One is a knight played by Nicholas Cage. The other, is a mercenary played by Ron Perlman.  On their way home they become involved in a witch trial at a village suffering from a plague.  The two men are drafted into transporting the girl accused of witchcraft, by wagon to a distant abbey where she can be properly tried and executed by an order of Monks who specialize in the handling of witches.

Our two anti-heroes are accompanied on their quest by another soldier, a fanatical  priest, a thief, and an altar boy- all they need now is a gruff Dwarf and a Elven Wizard.

From that point it becomes the all too familiar linear adventure, with a few surprises.   For me the film fluctuated from lame to not so bad. I’ve never been a fan of Cage, but if I can sit through Kevin Costner as Robin Hood, I can sit through this.

Ron Perlman does the big, gruff, badass guy that he always does, so no new ground there.   If you catch a matinée, Season of the Witch isn't a bad way to spend a rainy afternoon, but I'm sure it will be out of theaters before you can blink twice, which means you'll probably have to wait for it to show up on USA network.

Erisa in Black and White

In anticipation of the Legends of Steel ZeFRS Edition I thought I would share with you the the new map for the interior of the book. The map is actually the same but instead of just doing it in grey-scale Jason Chalker did a complete re-rendering of it in Black and White. The result as you can see is very sharp and crisp.  This will be the map in the center spread pages of LoS ZeFRS. which should be out by late January or early February.

IDW Publishing has begun a license with WOTC to produce a Dungeons and Dragons comic book series based on the latest (4th) edition of the classic RPG.  The series is titled “Dungeons & Dragons” and involves the adventures of a group of characters representative of the major races and classes from the game. I’ve seen a number of “D&D comics” come and go but I have to say that I never enjoyed any of them as much as I’m enjoying this one. “Dungeons & Dragons is quick, witty and reminiscent to me of watching an episode of the TV show “Firefly”.  These days I only have a few comic titles that I buy on a regular basis; “Dungeons & Dragons” has made the cut. It’s been four fun issues staring with issue #0. I’m actually excited to see a new issue, and I haven’t been excited like that since the early issues of “Knights of the Dinner Table”.

I need a WordPress site built!

I'll be launching Dicey Tales soon and I've decided to give it a dedicated site. I have the domain and the WordPress account. What I dont have is the time or skill to build a real snazzy site. So i figure I'll have one built professionally.

If anyone knows of a web designer skilled in WordPress I would appreciate a heads up. As you can imagine there are a great deal of designers out there online all promising to be skilled and professional. I need both. I need the skills to help me achieve what I want with WP and the professionalism to stick to deadlines and render a finished product without excuses.

As all the folks dealing with Evil DM Productions can attest - I pay on time, so I expect the work to be what I want and on time. I'm not really such a hard ass I just want to be clear.

If you think you have the chops to take on the job drop me a email with your phone number (Email has its uses, but if I cant meet face to face I need to speak to the person I'm hiring).
the email address is Boojiesdad@gmaildotcom.

Looking for apps for my iTouch

My Christmas present to myself this year was an iPod touch. What I'm wondering is if any of you guys out there can turn me on to some of your favorite Apps. For instance, a dice roller- what self respecting Evil DM wouldn't have a dice rolling app on his iPod? The problem is there are several dice rolling apps and I'm looking to hear from you all to tell me your favorites.
